Is the 12-3-30 workout good for weight loss?

Partly trueEvidence: Trials

It's a real calorie-burning workout, but no study shows it's the best for weight loss; a run burns the same faster.

What you hear: “Walking 30 minutes at a 12% incline and 3 mph is the best workout for losing weight.”

What the studies found

The only lab study we found had 16 young, active adults (14 with complete data) do 30 minutes of 12-3-30 and, on another day, a self-paced run that burned the same calories: both burned about 308 to 310 calories, but the run took about 24 minutes instead of 30. 12-3-30 drew a larger share of its energy from fat during the session (about 41% vs 33%), but the authors point out that total calories burned, not the fuel mix during exercise, drives weight loss. No trial has tested 12-3-30 itself for weight loss. A pooled analysis of 116 trials in adults with overweight found each 30 minutes a week of aerobic exercise lowered weight by about half a kilo, with more than 150 minutes a week likely needed for clearly meaningful fat loss.

What you could do

12-3-30 is a fine choice if you enjoy it; the best workout for weight loss is one you'll keep doing most weeks, alongside your eating habits.

How we judged it

Partly true: Some truth, but oversold as usually said. We judge the claim as it is usually said online, not the habit itself. Trials assign people at random, so they can show cause; observed studies follow people and show a link, not proof. Last checked: October 2026.

The studies, in their own words

  1. Wong et al. Int J Exerc Sci 2025
The results showed that, when matched for total energy expenditure, 12-3-30 had a significantly longer completion time, lower energy expenditure rate, higher %FAT, and lower %CHO than self-paced running.
  2. Wong et al. Int J Exerc Sci 2025 (Table 1)
    12-3-30 30.08 (0.08) 307.58 (58.73) 10.23 (1.96) 59.98 40.56 Run 23.89 (2.81) 309.74 (59.70) 13.08 (2.60) 67.47 33.12
  3. Wong et al. Int J Exerc Sci 2025
In reality, increasing energy expenditure in support of achieving negative energy balance is the main determinant for weight loss.
  4. Jayedi et al. JAMA Netw Open 2024
Each 30 minutes per week of aerobic exercise was associated with reduced body weight by 0.52 kg
  5. Jayedi et al. JAMA Netw Open 2024
However, aerobic training exceeding 150 minutes per week at moderate intensity or greater may be needed to achieve clinically important reductions.
