Does the carnivore diet heal the body?

Not provenEvidence: Observed

No controlled trials; evidence is surveys, case reports and small uncontrolled studies, with high LDL common.

What you hear: “Eating only meat, eggs and animal fat heals the body and reverses chronic disease.”

What the studies found

A 2026 scoping review found only nine human studies and rated the evidence very limited because of small samples, short follow-up and no control groups. The largest is a social-media survey of 2,029 followers who reported feeling well, but those who shared lab results had a typical LDL cholesterol of 172 mg/dL, well above the usual target. Large cohort studies link low-carb diets built on animal fat and protein to an 18% higher death rate (a link, not proof).

Take care: A 2026 review flags likely shortfalls in fibre, vitamin C, vitamin D, calcium, magnesium and iodine, and raised LDL cholesterol.

What you could do

If you try it, get your cholesterol checked before and after, and talk to a doctor, especially with heart risk factors.

See it in the habit library, with what it means for your own longevity score.

Not medical advice. General information from published studies, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Talk with your doctor before starting a supplement or changing a medicine, especially if you are pregnant, take other medicines or have a health condition.

How we judged it

Not proven: Not enough good human evidence yet, either way. We judge the claim as it is usually said online, not the habit itself. Trials assign people at random, so they can show cause; observed studies follow people and show a link, not proof. Last checked: October 2026.

The studies, in their own words

  1. Lietz et al. Nutrients 2026
Overall, the quality of evidence is very limited due to small sample sizes, short study durations, and the absence of control groups.
  2. Seidelmann et al. Lancet Public Health 2018
mortality increased when carbohydrates were exchanged for animal-derived fat or protein (1·18, 1·08-1·29)
  3. Lennerz et al. Curr Dev Nutr 2021
    Among a subset reporting current lipids, LDL-cholesterol was markedly elevated (172 mg/dL), whereas HDL-cholesterol (68 mg/dL) and triglycerides (68 mg/dL) were optimal.
