Does celery juice heal chronic illness?

Not provenEvidence: No trials

No trials test celery juice for chronic illness; there's one case report and small celery extract studies.

What you hear: “Drinking 16 ounces of straight celery juice every morning on an empty stomach heals chronic illnesses.”

What the studies found

We found no clinical trials testing celery juice as a treatment for chronic illness. A 2025 pooled analysis of 10 small randomised trials (511 people) found celery preparations lowered blood pressure, fasting blood sugar and triglycerides, but results varied widely between trials, and celery seed products or concentrated doses over 1,000 mg a day worked better than other celery preparations. The only published report on celery juice itself that we found describes a single 74-year-old man whose blood pressure fell over six months while also receiving other care, which cannot show cause and effect. Celery is a healthy vegetable, but the 'heals chronic illness' claim has no direct support.

Take care: The main risk is using juice in place of proven treatment for a chronic condition; juicing also removes most of the fibre in whole celery.

What you could do

Enjoy celery or its juice if you like it, but keep it alongside, not instead of, treatment your clinician recommends.

How we judged it

Not proven: Not enough good human evidence yet, either way. We judge the claim as it is usually said online, not the habit itself. Trials assign people at random, so they can show cause; observed studies follow people and show a link, not proof. Last checked: October 2026.

The studies, in their own words

  1. Liu et al. Front Nutr 2025
Our meta-analysis included ten randomized controlled studies with a total of 511 participants.
  2. Liu et al. Front Nutr 2025
Subgroup analysis revealed that celery seeds or celery preparations exceeding 1,000 mg/day were more effective than other parts of celery.
  3. Liu et al. Front Nutr 2025
However, the substantial heterogeneity observed for most outcomes and limited sample sizes warrant further high-quality clinical trials with longer follow-up periods to confirm these effects and establish optimal dosing regimens.
  4. Illes, J Chiropr Med 2021 (case report)
Interventions included daily intake of celery juice over 6 months, which was approved by his medical doctor's nurse.
